Island Rock Gym
I’m a usual rock climber at Island Rock, climbing gym. What started as chit-chat has evolved into an amazing professional relationship. I’m a design consultant for the gym, and have been commissioned for original work as well. This work includes a custom font, custom stickers, and t-shirt designs. I’ve also given a consultation on their latest brochure design.
The inspiration for this font comes directly from rock formations. My biggest struggle was finding the balance of how much rocky detail to add without it compromising the legibility of the letters.
This font is used on posters and social media posts by the gym.
Originally, I was just asked to do a 26 letter set, but Ross came back to me to get numbers and punctuation made to complete the font for his purposes.
Graphic Apparel Designs
Upon seeing my original designs, the manager requested that I adapt graphic art I made for print format into graphics for hoodies and t-shirts.
Brochure Consultation
Once the marketing expert laid out the document to the best of her ability, she sent the brochure to me. I was consulted on my design sensibility. With legibility and breathability of the text in mind, I did my best to cleanly design the brochure. The Rockface Slab Display font is used for the headers, as well as my illustrated rock hold background.
Custom Stickers
The manager came up to me one day while I was stretching and placed sample stickers in front of me. He asked if I could make some climber-animal stickers for the gym’s 25th anniversary. With this simple brief, I conceptualized these rad critters.
